Atopic Dermatitis in Charlottesville

Atopic Dermatitis: Often referred to as eczema, atopic dermatitis, involves an allergic reaction affecting the face, elbows and knees. This appears as a red, itchy and scaly rash that may be seen in young infants, as well as later in life in individuals with a personal or family history of allergies.  In such cases, some of the common triggering agents include contact with irritants (for example, soaps and wool), aeroallergens (such as dust, cat dander) or overheating and sweating. In some individuals, emotional stress can also precipitate such symptoms. Some children may have a flare up with a skin staph infection. Diagnosis of the condition involves the presence of an itchy rash that appears bubbly or 'eczematous,' in an individual with a personal or family history of allergies (atopy). Management of atopic dermatitis involves both treatment of symptoms and prevention of contact with triggers.
